This design from late in her reign shows her in right-profile relief wearing a widows veil. The coins come with inscriptions of M. THERESIA D.G.R IMP. HU. BO. REG., and S.F. Translated into English, these inscriptions represent her titles and the designers of the original coin. This includes a shield with an imperial crown at the center, the arms of Hungary, Bohemia, Burgundy, and Burgau in the quadrants, and the double-headed eagle supporting the shield. The inscriptions of ARCHID AVST. DUX. BURG. CO. TYR, and 1780, represent her additional titles and the year of issue.
History
The 1780 Thaler design is the last one that was used in the series. Upon her death in November 1780, the imagery of the 1 Thaler was frozen in this likeness and struck with the same images and dates through 1858. The Maria Theresa Thaler went on to become a major trade currency between European nations and also between Europe and the kingdoms and nations of the Middle East.
