The Draped Bust Silver Dollar was produced by the United States Mint between 1795 and 1804 and stands as one of the most recognizable coins from Americas earliest years. Designed by Robert Scot, the coin introduced a refined image of Liberty with flowing hair and a draped neckline on the obverse. In 1798, the series adopted a new reverse design featuring a heraldic eagle, replacing the original small eagle motif. Right now, 1800 Draped Bust Silver Dollars are available online from Provident Metals.

These 1800 Draped Bust Silver Dollar Coins have been graded VF25 by PCGS. Coins in Very Fine condition display noticeable circulation wear, though major design elements remain clear. The Dotted Date designation refers to small dots near the date on the obverse, a detail that distinguishes this specific variety within the series.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 1800 Draped Bust Silver Dollar, Lady Liberty is shown in right-facing profile. This design represents the second obverse style used on US silver dollars and marked a move toward more detailed and elegant artwork. Libertys long hair flows freely, and the design is framed by 13 stars representing the original states. Many experts believe Robert Scot used Ann Willing Bingham, a prominent Philadelphia figure, as the inspiration for Libertys appearance. The inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1800.

Reverse

The reverse design of the 1800 Draped Bust Dollar features the heraldic eagle, which had only recently been introduced into the series. First appearing in 1798, the design shows a bald eagle holding a shield that symbolizes national unity. The eagle clutches arrows and an olive branch, representing strength and peace, while a grouping of 13 stars appears above its head. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

History

The year 1800 placed this silver dollar within a young nation still shaping its economy. Most Americans lived in rural areas and relied on agriculture for their livelihoods. Barter remained common, and foreign silver coins often circulated more widely than US-minted money. Coins like the Draped Bust Silver Dollar helped bring stability and recognition to early American currency.
