One of the earliest and most admired coin designs from the early United States Mint, the Draped Bust style appeared on several denominations between 1795 and 1807. Its elegant, classic look reflected the young nations hopes and ideals, showing Liberty with flowing hair and a light drapery across her shouldera quiet image of freedom and virtue. Right now, 1807 Draped Bust Half Dollar Coins in certified condition are available at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic slab!
  • Final date in the Draped Bust Half Dollar Series!
  • Contains .3866 troy oz of actual silver content.
  • Bears a face value of $.50 (USD) backed by the federal government.
  • Issued a grade of Very Good 10 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.
  • The obverse features Lady Liberty.
  • On the reverse is the heraldic eagle.

Each 1807 Draped Bust Half Dollar Coin comes certified in VG10 condition. These coins show moderate to heavy wear from circulation, though key details are still visible. Each piece is struck in .892 fine silver, a purity level typical of early U.S. silver coins made for everyday transactions.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1807 Draped Bust Half Dollar shows Liberty facing right, her long hair flowing and a soft drapery resting around her neck. Artist Gilbert Stuart is credited with this design, which was reportedly based on Ann Willing Bingham, a well-known Philadelphia socialite who represented the grace of early American ideals. The inscriptions here include LIBERTY and 1807.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1807 Draped Bust Half Dollar Coin is the heraldic eagle, adopted in 1798. This replaced the earlier small eagle design with a stronger national image. The eagle is shown facing forward with a shield at its chest, holding arrows of defense in one claw and an olive branch of peace in the other. The inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

History

The Draped Bust Half Dollar was the second design used for the nations half dollars. First introduced in 1796, it replaced the short-lived Flowing Hair design used in 1794 and 1795. In 1798, the coins reverse was redesigned to include the heraldic eagle, a style that continued through the last year of issue in 1807.
