The Capped Bust series replaced the Draped Bust design and was featured on U.S. silver coins from 1807 through 1839, reflecting a new stage in early American coin design. The work of assistant engraver John Reich, a German immigrant, the design depicts Liberty with a simple cloth cap. Today, 1829 Capped Bust Dimes in certified condition are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
All 1829 Capped Bust Dimes offered are About Uncirculated 58 coins. These AU58 pieces show only light wear and are often mistaken for uncirculated examples. They exhibit minimal friction on the highest points and maintain much of their original luster.
Obverse
Obverse details on 1829 Capped Bust Dimes show Reichs Liberty portrait as engraved by William Kneass. Liberty faces left wearing a Phrygian capoften called the Liberty capwith soft curls framing her face. The inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1829.
Reverse
Reverse visuals display the American heraldic eagle in front-facing relief, looking to its right (coin left). The eagle holds arrows symbolizing readiness for defense and an olive branch representing peace, positioned before the U.S. national shield. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 10 C.
History
The Capped Bust design appeared on a range of U.S. coin denominations, including half dimes, dimes, quarters, and half dollars, as well as briefly on gold half eagles and eagles. Reichs artistry added a more dimensional and lifelike look to the nations coinage, contrasting with the flatter details of previous designs. Over the years, the design was adjusted several times, including modifications to the stars and minor changes to the eagle on the reverse.
