Production of the US $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle in the 1850s was closely tied to the California Gold Rush, which brought a large amount of newly mined gold into the nations economy that needed to be turned into coinage. First released in 1850, this $20 piece carried James B. Longacres portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet and surrounded by thirteen stars. This look, often called the Liberty Coronet design, became the longest-running design used on the $20 Double Eagle. Today, 1854 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
All 1854 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins available here come in XF45 condition. Coins in this grade display light wear on the raised details, while some original mint luster may still be visible. To support everyday commerce, several US Mint locations produced these coins, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, and the newly opened San Francisco Mint, which soon became an important facility for processing gold from the West.
Obverse
On the obverse of 1854 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins, you will see a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. Designed by Longacre, this image shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown on her head. Around her, the field holds 13 stars representing the original colonies, along with the year of issue. The inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1854.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1854 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin shows the Great Seal of the United States. In this design, a bald eagle appears in front-facing relief with the US national shield on its chest, along with arrows symbolizing readiness for war and an olive branch representing peace. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY D.
History
In 1854, the United States was experiencing steady growth, supported by expanding railroad networks, movement into western lands, and strong farm exports, even though deeper disagreements were starting to show. New rail lines connecting the East Coast and the Midwest helped trade grow quickly, and gold from California added strength to the money supply. At the same time, heavy speculation in land and railroad stocks created financial risks, and rising tensions over the spread of slavery into new territories were straining relations between the North and South, setting the stage for the Panic of 1857.
