Obverse

The obverse side of the 1855 Kellogg Commemorative S.S. Central America Gold Coin features the left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Originally created by Christian Gobrecht, this design featured widely throughout the 19th century on American gold coins. It depicts Liberty in left-profile relief with a coronet crown and a field of 13 stars around the design element.

Reverse

On the reverse of 1855 Kellogg $50 Commemorative S.S. Central America Gold Coins is a depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Also a Gobrecht design from the 19th century, this design was likewise used on countless US denominations throughout the era.

History

The S.S. Central America was a steamship that operated in the Atlantic Ocean and the northern Caribbean between ports on the East Coast of the United States down through Cuba and Central America. The ship was returning to the US after stopping in Havana with a load of gold from the California gold rush when it was set upon by a hurricane off the coast of the Carolinas. When the ship sank with 14,000 Kilograms of gold on board, the loss of the metals contributed to the Panic of 1857 that saw a shrinking world economy combine with over-expansion of the US economy to create one of the first global financial crises.
