The Liberty Head design used on the US Eagle Gold Coins from 1839 to 1907/1908 was the longest-running and most populous design of the series. The image was not only used over the course of nearly 70 years, but it was also replicated across all four denominations of the US Eagle. Despite its widespread use, there are rare dates in this issue depending on the denomination. In the Half Eagle Series, the 1856 is one of those rare dates. Provident Metals currently offers 1856 $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle Gold Coins to you in certified condition.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with a plastic PCGS or NGC protective slab!
  • Type 1 reverse imagery comes without a national motto!
  • Artwork by 3rd Chief Engraver of the US Mint, Christian Gobrecht!
  • Limited number of certified 1856 Half Eagles available!
  • Contains .242 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Issued a face value of $5 (USD) by the government of the United States.
  • Bears a Grade of XF45 from the Professional Coin Grading Service or the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.
  • Liberty on the obverse.
  • Heraldic eagle on the reverse.
  • Please remember your coins may have matching labels or varied labels if you buy several.

When you purchase these 1856 $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle Gold Coins at Provident Metals, the coin you receive will come with an Extremely Fine 45 grade from either the PCGS or the NGC. Coins in this condition showcase impressive gold luster with only minor wear and tear present on the highest reliefs of the coin. Each one is overall visibly pleasing.

Provident Metals cannot guarantee whether you receive a coin with a PCGS label or NGC label. All coins are chosen randomly after your payment clears and determined by in-stock items at that moment. If you buy several coins, please remember all labels could match or you could receive varied labels.

Obverse

Lady Liberty is shown on the obverse of 1856 Liberty Head Half Eagles. This design from Christian Gobrecht shows Liberty in left-profile relief with a coronet in her hair. The coronet has an inscription of Liberty and there is a date mark of 1856 beneath. There is an arch of 13 stars around Liberty.

Reverse

The heraldic eagle features on the reverse of 1856 $5 Liberty Head Half Eagles. This design is also from Gobrecht and shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief. As it clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace, it also supports the US national shield on its chest. Inscriptions on this side include United States of America and Five D.

History

The US Mint only issued 200,000 of these 1856 Half Eagles. Through melting and circulation wear, few coins remain that are in certified condition. Estimates put the number of surviving specimens from this release at just 400 in total.
