Obverse

The obverse of 1857 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins features a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. This design was created in 1838 by Christian Gobrecht and began to feature on the Half Eagle in 1839. The image shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown with the word LIBERTY inscribed on it. The field includes 13 stars around the portrait and a date mark of 1857 below.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 1857 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin is the depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Created in 1794 for the first US coins, this version of the heraldic eagle was modified by Christian Gobrecht. It depicts a front-facing eagle with the US national shield, arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE D.

History

The Liberty Half Eagle was the longest-used design in this series. The image was used from 1839 to 1907. Its length of use surpassed the total of all other designs in the series combined.
