History

The 1858-S Double Eagle is a notable early issue from the San Francisco Mint, a facility that became increasingly important during the California Gold Rush. At the time, huge quantities of gold were being discovered in the western United States, and the San Francisco Mint played a key role in turning that gold into official US coinage.
