Pre-1933 American gold coins are well known among collectors for their history, beauty, and consistent gold content. US gold coinage produced between 1838 and 1933 featured standardized weights for each denomination and was struck in a reliable 90% gold composition with 10% copper. These classic coins offer a strong connection to early American commerce while also providing impressive precious metal value. Today, 1858-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins with Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC) authentication are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
All 1858-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins available here are graded AU55. This About Uncirculated grade is toward the higher end of the AU scale (5058) and reflects a coin with only light wear visible on its highest points. Many examples in AU55 condition still show strong detail and remaining luster. The addition of CAC authentication provides extra peace of mind, confirming the coin meets the strict quality expectations for its assigned grade level.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1858-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coin features Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. She wears a coronet with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by 13 stars along the rim, with the date positioned below the portrait.
Reverse
On the reverse, the 1858-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin displays a heraldic eagle with spread wings holding an olive branch and arrows. The design is completed with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY D. This coin features the Type I reverse design, which was later modified in 1866 to include the national motto and again in 1877 when the denomination was updated to read DOLLARS instead of D.
History
The 1858-S Double Eagle is a notable early issue from the San Francisco Mint, a facility that became increasingly important during the California Gold Rush. At the time, huge quantities of gold were being discovered in the western United States, and the San Francisco Mint played a key role in turning that gold into official US coinage. As a Pre-1933 gold coin, this piece is also significant because coins from this era remained legal to own after the 1933 Executive Order issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt restricted private gold holdings and led to the end of circulating US gold coinage.
