Obverse

She wears a coronet with the word LIBERTY inscribed across it, while 13 stars appear around the design to represent the original colonies. The date is shown beneath Liberty at the bottom of the coin. The inscriptions here read LIBERTY and 1858.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1858-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin, the design features a heraldic eagle with its wings extended. The eagle holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons, and the inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TWENTY D. This Type I reverse design was later updated in 1866 with the addition of the national motto, and later modified again in 1877 when the denomination was changed to spell out DOLLARS rather than using the abbreviated D. Inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TWENTY D., and the S mint mark.
