Pre-1933 American gold coins are widely collected for their historic value and classic designs. Gold issues produced from 1834 to 1933 are especially known for their consistent weight standards across denominations, as well as their long-running gold composition of 90% gold and 10% copper. These coins represent a unique period in American coinage history and remain popular with collectors who appreciate both their gold content and their connection to the nations past. Right now, 1858-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1858-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin offered here has been graded AU58 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. This grade falls at the top of the About Uncirculated range, which spans from AU50 through AU58. Coins with an AU58 designation are often referred to as sliders, as they appear very close to uncirculated condition and typically show only light wear on the highest design points. Many examples still feature strong detail and noticeable mint luster.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1858-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin depicts Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. She wears a coronet with the word LIBERTY inscribed across it, while 13 stars appear around the design to represent the original colonies. The date is shown beneath Liberty at the bottom of the coin. The inscriptions here read LIBERTY and 1858.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1858-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin, the design features a heraldic eagle with its wings extended. The eagle holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons, and the inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TWENTY D. This Type I reverse design was later updated in 1866 with the addition of the national motto, and later modified again in 1877 when the denomination was changed to spell out DOLLARS rather than using the abbreviated D. Inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TWENTY D., and the S mint mark.
History
The 1858-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle is an early issue from the San Francisco Mint, a facility that opened only a few years earlier during the California Gold Rush. This $20 gold coin features the well-known Liberty Head design by James B. Longacre on the obverse, paired with a heraldic eagle design on the reverse. With a recorded mintage of 846,710 pieces, the 1858-S is more obtainable than some other Type I Double Eagles, though most surviving examples were used in circulation or sent overseas for trade.
