The Liberty Gold Double Eagle was the first design in the United States’ $20 gold coin series. Issued from 1850 until 1907, this coin outlasted its successor, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. The $20 Liberty Double Eagles available here were first minted in 1861, just before the US Civil War. Today, you can find certified 1861-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins at Provident Metals.

Obverse
On the obverse of the 1861-S Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin, you’ll see a portrait of Lady Liberty. This left-facing bust follows Greco-Roman design traditions, depicting Liberty wearing a coronet crown and surrounded by 13 stars. Inscriptions on this side read LIBERTY and 1861.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1861-S $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin features the Great Seal of the United States. This detailed design includes a bald eagle holding the US national shield, with its talons gripping the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. The inscriptions on this side read UNTIED STATES OF AMERICA, TWENTY D. and the S mint mark.
History
The 1861 issue of the $20 Liberty Double Eagles was a pivotal one. The start of the US Civil War in 1861 changed the dynamics of gold coin production, with the San Francisco Mint becoming the main production site from 1862-1865. The peak of San Francisco’s dominance in production came early in the war. In 1862, San Francisco struck eight times the volume of the Philadelphia Mint and struck roughly seven times the volume of the Philadelphia Mint the following year in 1863.
