The 1862 coin was issued during the second year of King Victor Emmanuel IIs reign. The 1881 coin was released during the reign of King Umberto I. The inscriptions on this face include the date mark and the name of the reigning monarch featured in the design.

Reverse

In the reverse design of 1862/1881 20 Lire Italian Gold Coins, the mint features the image of the coat of arms for the Kingdom of Italy. The seal includes a shield that is quartered by a cross and topped with an imperial crown. The seal is flanked around the very edge of the design field by an ornate wreath. The inscription on this side identifies the face value as L20.

History

The 20 Lire Italian Gold Coin was issued just before the Kingdom of Italy joined the Latin Monetary Union, a continental system that unified the weights and associated values of gold coins across a number of nations. These weights and values were based on the coins of the Franc denomination.
