During the 1860s, the San Francisco Mint became essential in producing American gold coins. Before the US Civil War, the Philadelphia and New Orleans Mints were key players in producing Liberty Double Eagle gold coins and other denominations. However, during the Civil War and Reconstruction, most production was moved to the San Francisco Mint. Currently, you can find 1867-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins in certified condition available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These 1867-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins are in AU55 condition. This numeric grade places them near the high end of the About Uncirculated range. You can expect medium to near-full luster with very light signs of wear at the highest points.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1867-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin features a portrait of Lady Liberty. Designed by James B. Longacre in 1849, this left-profile relief shows Liberty with a coronet crown and a ring of 13 stars surrounding her bust. The date appears at the bottom of the coin. Inscriptions here read LIBERTY and 1867.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1867-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins is a depiction of the Great Seal of the United States. This design showcases a front-facing bald eagle with the US national shield, arrows of war, and an olive branch of peace. Above the eagle’s head is a ring of 13 stars. These coins are categorized as Type II specimens, which refers to the second iteration of the reverse design. Inscriptions on this side read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, TWENTY D., and the S mint mark.
History
From 1850 to 1866, the US Mint issued Liberty Double Eagles without the national motto on the reverse. However, late in 1866, the US Mint added the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” within the ring of stars above the eagle’s head. Type II specimens were produced from 1866 to 1876, before the Type III design was introduced, which continued until 1907. While Type III coins maintained the same motto as Type II coins, they changed the denomination inscription from “Twenty D” to “Twenty Dollars.”
