The $20 Double Eagle is a treasured coin from American history. It is the largest coin denomination ever issued by the US Mint for circulation and was produced from 1850 to 1933. The original design, known as the Liberty Double Eagle, appeared on the coins for 58 years. Obverse
The obverse of these 1873 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins features a bust of Lady Liberty. This design by Longacre was inspired by Christian Gobrechts portrait of Liberty, depicting her in left-profile with a coronet crown. The inscriptions read LIBERTY and 1873.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins shows the Great Seal of the United States. This design includes a front-facing bald eagle holding the US national shield, olive branch of peace, and arrows of war. Inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and TWENTY D.
History
In 1873, more than 2.7 million coins were issued by the US Mint in the Double Eagle denomination. The Philadelphia Mint issued more than 1.7 million coins, while the San Francisco Mint issued 1.04 million coins and the Carson City Mint struck just 22,410 coins.

This grade means the coins are almost BU in quality, with minimal friction marks on the highest points and nearly full mint luster. As an Open 3 coin, these pieces have more defined separation in the tips of the number 3 in the 1873 date.
