The Double Eagle held the highest denomination in the US Eagle Series from the United States Mint. Not only was it the largest denomination among the four gold coins in this collection, but it was also the biggest coin denomination the US Mint ever released for circulation. Right now, 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins with a Closed 3 are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin is graded Very Fine 20 by the PCGS. This grade signifies medium to light wear, but the main details remain visible. These Closed 3 coins feature a tighter closure for the number 3 in the 1873 date mark on the obverse.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1873-S $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin showcases a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Inspired by Christian Gobrechts design on other US Eagle denominations, this depiction features Liberty with a coronet crown and a ring of 13 stars around the edge. Inscriptions here include LIBERTY and 1873.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1873-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin presents an ornate version of the Great Seal of the United States. It depicts the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the national shield, arrows of war, and an olive branch of peace. Above the eagles head, the national motto is inscribed within a ring of 13 stars. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, TWENTY D., and the S mint mark.
History
James B. Longacre designed the Liberty Gold Double Eagle in 1849. Longacre is best known for designing the Indian Head cent, introduced in 1859 and minted until 1909. He also designed the Flying Eagle cent (1856-1858) and the Shield nickel (1866-1883).
