The United States Mint produced 1873 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins at three branch mints. The Philadelphia Mint issued the greatest number of coins, while the Carson City Mint struck the smallest by a wide margin. San Francisco produced just over 1 million coins.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1873-S Pre-33 Double Eagle Gold Coin features a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. She wears a coronet crown, and 13 stars encircle the edge of the coin. Inscriptions on this side read LIBERTY and 1873.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1873-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins displays Longacres unique heraldic eagle design, known as the Great Seal of the United States. The eagle is shown front-facing, clutching arrows and an olive branch, with the US national shield on its chest. Above the eagle is a ring of 13 stars with the national motto engraved within. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, TWENTY D., and the S mint mark.

History

The 1850 introduction of the Double Eagle required a new design by James B. Longacre, then Chief Engraver of the US Mint. He took inspiration from Christian Gobrechts designs on other Eagle coins, adding his unique touches to the Liberty image and creating a distinct reverse design.
