The $20 Liberty Head gold double eagle was first struck in 1849 after the California Gold Rush dramatically increased the nations gold supply and led to the creation of higher-value coinage. Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, this coin displays a coronet portrait of Liberty. Provident Metals now has certified 1875 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins available for purchase.
Highlights:
Each 1875 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin listed here is graded Mint State 63. MS63 coins typically show muted mint luster with many small marks, and a few larger scattered marks may be seen. Even so, the coins still offer good visual appeal.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1875 Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coin, Liberty is shown in left-profile wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. A ring of 13 stars circles the portrait, with the date of issue below. The inscriptions here read LIBERTY and 1875.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1875 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin shows the Great Seal of the United States. The heraldic eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, with a shield across its chest. As a Type II reverse, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears above, while the denomination is written as TWENTY D. Additional inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
History
In 1875, the United States Mint struck Liberty Double Eagles at three locations. San Francisco produced most of the coins with over 1.23 million pieces. Philadelphia struck 295,720 coins, while Carson City created just 111,151, bringing the total mintage to 1,639,871 coins.
