Seated Liberty Quarters from the year of 1876 were minted at a prodigious scale that made them the most common date in the 19th century and a flagship for the iconic Seated Liberty coins that have been fixtures on collectors’ markets ever since. Their former ubiquity means that they are a reasonably common coin in most grades to this day, with a few exceptions. According to the standard-setting coin appraisers of PCGS, the quarters struck at the Philadelphia Mint in that year are relatively rare in uncirculated Mint State grades. They estimate a surviving supply of just 850 coins of this kind available in a grade of Mint State 60 or higher. The team at Provident Metals now offers such an 1876 Seated Liberty Quarter for online purchase.
Highlights:
This 1876 Seated Liberty Quarter is available to you in the kind of tamper-proof secure plastic slab that PCGS has helped to pioneer over nearly four decades. Given the survival estimate of only a few hundred pieces, it’s the kind of kind that’s worth ordering early as you either begin or expand your collection of Seated Liberty coins. Its Mint State 60 grade indicates that — despite having large contact marks, damage spots, and potential rim nicks along with a dull luster — it is free of circulation wear. Provident Metal fully insures each shipment against even the remote chance of loss or damage.
Obverse
The coin’s obverse field features an enthroned Lady Liberty, holding a shield in one hand and a wand with a Phrygian cap hanging from its end in the other, framed by fourteen decorative stars and the inscriptions “1876.”
Reverse
A heraldic eagle appears on the reverse field juxtaposed with a shield and carrying a cluster of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. It is framed by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUAR. DOLL.” for the coin’s face value.
History
The classic Seated Liberty Quarter Dollar of 1876 was a phenomenon of 19th-century numismatics, the most prolifically minted quarter to be produced between the years 1796 and 1920. Some 17 million of them were struck at branch mints across America, which established it as the century’s most populous date. A great number of them have survived into later years, making the Seated Liberty Quarter a mainstay for modern collectors and inventors.
