During the United States Civil War and the Reconstruction Era, coin production by the US Mint largely moved to its branch facilities in Carson City and San Francisco. Obverse
The obverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins displays a left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a coronet crown, encircled by 13 stars. The inscriptions read LIBERTY and 1877.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin showcases the Great Seal of the United States. The 1877 coins were the first to feature the Type III reverse design, with the denomination engraved as TWENTY DOLLARS instead of TWENTY D. Inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, TWENTY DOLLARS, and the S mint mark.
History
Initially, Double Eagle Coins were predominantly struck by the Philadelphia Mint. However, the onset of the US Civil War in 1861 necessitated the relocation of gold coin production to the San Francisco Mint, which played a leading role in this effort during the Civil War and the Reconstruction Era in the 1870s.
