The obverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin features James B. Longacre’s classic Lady Liberty design in left-profile relief, wearing a coronet crown. Thirteen stars encircle her portrait, with the year of issue at the bottom. Inscriptions read LIBERTY and 1877.
Reverse
The reverse of this 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin showcases Longacre’s heraldic eagle design, with the bird facing left and a shield on its chest. Surrounding the eagle are the coin’s identifying marks. Inscriptions include TWENTY DOLLARS, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and IN GOD WE TRUST.
History
This iconic coin series underwent three reverse design changes during its production. The Type I was issued from 1850 to 1865. In 1866, the motto “In God We Trust” was added to the reverse. Finally, in 1877, the third unique reverse debuted, featuring the full-spelled-out denomination.
