The 1877 Liberty Gold Eagle release may seem like just another year, but it signifies the final change in the reverse design of the Liberty Double Eagle Series. This makes the 1877 coins particularly important. Certified 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins are now available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin we offer comes in a PCGS plastic slab with an AU58 grade. These About Uncirculated coins are on the verge of being Uncirculated, showing near-full mint luster with slight wear on the highest points.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coin features James B. Longacres depiction of Lady Liberty. Liberty is shown in a left-profile relief, wearing a coronet crown and surrounded by 13 stars. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1877.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1877-S $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin, the third iteration of Longacres design is displayed. It features the Great Seal of the United States, along with the denomination (TWENTY DOLLARS) and the national motto. The full set of inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, TWENTY DOLLARS, and the S mint mark.
History
From 1850 to 1907, the $20 Liberty Double Eagle maintained the same obverse design, while the reverse was modified twice. This resulted in three design types: Type I (1850-1866), Type II (1866-1876), and Type III (1877-1907). The Type III design featured more than the inclusion of DOLLARS in place of D for the denomination. The font for IN GOD WE TRUST and the phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM on the eagle’s banner were both enlarged for the Type III release.
