Obverse
The obverse of the 1877-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle boasts a striking portrayal of Lady Liberty by James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Liberty is depicted in left-profile relief adorned with a coronet crown, encircled by 13 stars. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1877.
Reverse
On the reverse, you’ll find the Type III design, introduced in 1877. This design alteration showcased the face value as “TWENTY DOLLARS,” replacing the previous “TWENTY D.” inscription. Additional inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and IN GOD WE TRUST.
History
During 1877, the majority of $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles were struck on the West Coast at the San Francisco Mint. While coins were also minted by the Philadelphia Mint and Carson City Mint, their combined production amounted to just over 440,000 coinsnearly a million less than those minted in San Francisco.
