Morgan Dollar Silver Coins from the United States Mint represent the second-longest-running design series for silver dollars. Though the coins were met with mild interest in the design when originally released, the Morgan Dollar has become a favorite of 20thand 21st-centurycoin collectors. Provident Metals now offers you the chance to purchase 1878-1904 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online with a Mint State 61 grade.
Highlights:
The $1 (USD) silver coin known as the Morgan Silver Dollar was designed in 1878 by United States Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan. Mr. Morgan was born in Birmingham, England, and migrated to the United States in 1876. Already an experienced die engraver in England, he was hired as an assistant engraver at the US Mint by then-Chief Engraver William Barber. Morgans greatest design achievement was his namesake Morgan Silver Dollar, and he would go on to serve as the 7th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1917 until his death in 1925.
Obverse
On the obverse of Morgan Dollar Silver Coins is a left-profile portrait of Liberty. This design was created by Morgan with Anna Willis Williams as his model. It depicts Liberty with her hair in a loose bun at the back of her head. She wears a coronet and wreath crown in the design, with E Pluribus Unum, 13 stars, and the date mark inscribed on this side.
Reverse
The reverse of Morgan Dollar Silver Coins features a modified image of the heraldic eagle. Morgans design features the American bald eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, but does not include the national heraldic shield.
History
The Morgan Dollar Silver Coin went into circulation in 1878 and was produced each year until 1904. After 1904, silver dollars remained in circulation, but were no longer produced. Silver dollar coining returned in 1921 with the Morgan Dollar design selected again until the new Peace Dollar Silver Coin design was created.
Ordering
These 1878-1904 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are Mint State 61 specimens. A coin with the MS61 grade has diminished to noticeably impaired luster. The surface area may have clusters of large and small contact marks, noticeable hairlines, and even some scuff marks. All coins are housed in protective plastic slabs. These coins were graded either by the PCGS or NGC. We cannot guarantee the date mark you will receive or ensure that you provide various different date marks when buying more than one coin.
