During the early release of the Morgan Silver Dollar, four branch mints were tasked with striking the coins: Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City, and San Francisco. In 1878, the first Morgans produced were called 8TF coins, named for the eight tail feathers on the eagle. Soon after, the design was modified to feature seven tail feathers. These 1878 7TF Morgan Dollar Silver Coins have earned a Mint State 63 grade. In this condition, coins display some muted mint luster, numerous small contact marks, and the possibility of a few larger marks. Minor hairlines might also be noticeable without magnification. After a brief run of under 750,000 8TF coins, the Mint updated the design to 7TF and ramped up production during the first year of the Morgan Dollar Series.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1878 7TF Morgan Dollar Coin highlights George T. Morgans well-known design of Liberty. She is shown in left-profile relief, wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet inscribed with the word “Liberty.” Thirteen stars encircle the portrait, representing the original colonies. Inscriptions here read E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1878.
Reverse
For the reverse side of 1878 7TF Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, Morgan designed a striking image of a bald eagle with its wings fully spread. The eagle grips arrows in one talon, symbolizing defense, and an olive branch in the other, representing peace. The inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
The production numbers of Morgan Dollars shifted over time, largely due to legislative acts like the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890, which temporarily increased output. Scarce issues, such as the 1889-CC and 1893-S Morgan Dollars, are now highly sought after due to limited mintages during certain years.
