The Morgan Dollar Silver Coin was introduced by the United States Mint in 1878. This release marked the return of silver dollar coining in the US after a five-year hiatus and also brought with it a distinctive two-version issue in 1878. Known as the 8TF, these particular Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are unique. Today, you have the chance to get 1878 8TF Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online at Provident Metals in certified condition.
When the United States Mint introduced the Morgan Dollar Silver Coin in 1878, the first 750,000 coins struck featured eight tail feathers on the eagle in the reverse design. Known as the 8TF, these coins were struck briefly in early 1878 before the US Mint introduced the design with seven tail feathers that it would use through 1921.
On the obverse side of 1878 8TF Morgan Dollars, you will find a portrait of Lady Liberty. This image shows Liberty in left-profile relief with the laurel wreath and coronet crowns, as well as 13 stars and inscriptions of both 1878 and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
The reverse face of the 1878 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin comes with a depiction of the heraldic eagle. This version of the eagle was created in 1878 by George T. Morgan and shows the front-facing eagle with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
These 1878 8TF Morgan Dollars came from the Redfield. This collection is named after LeVere Redfield who hoarded the coins over decades and they were later discovered following his death in the 1970s. His hoard consisted of some 400,000 coins in 400 bags of silver dollars.
These 1878 8TF Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are in Mint State 63 condition. Coins in this listing have impaired mint luster, numerous small contact marks, scattered heavier marks, and even a few small hairlines visible without magnification.
