The Morgan Silver Dollar, particularly those minted at the Carson City Mint, are cherished pieces of American numismatic history. In the West, silver dollars were highly popular, and the Carson City Mint played a key role in their production. As the last purpose-built mint in the U.S., it quickly converted local silver into coins. Today, you can acquire 1878-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins in certified condition from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
All 1878-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins offered here are in Mint State 63 condition. These coins feature mint luster that is slightly impaired and have a generally appealing look. Expect to see numerous small contact marks and a few scattered heavy marks, with small hairlines visible without magnification.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1878-CC Morgan Dollar Coins showcases George T. Morgan’s portrait of Lady Liberty. This left-profile image, a hallmark of 19th-century American coins, depicts Liberty wearing a laurel wreath and a coronet crown. Inscriptions here include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1878.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1878-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins features Morgan’s design of the heraldic eagle. This version presents the American bald eagle in front-facing relief, with wings spread wide while clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. The inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the CC mint mark.
History
After the mint’s closure, many Carson City Morgan Dollars remained in government vaults. In the early 1970s, the U.S. Treasury discovered a large quantity of uncirculated CC Morgan Dollars in its vaults. These coins were subsequently sold to collectors through a series of public sales, which greatly increased interest in Carson City mintages.
