The Morgan Dollar Silver Coin was produced by the United States Mint from 1878 to 1904 and again one final time in 1921. The series saw production in each of these years at the San Francisco Mint and the Philadelphia Mint. The New Orleans Mint issued coins in all but the very first and very last years. Denver only issued the coins in 1921. Also included in the production of Morgan Dollars was the Carson City Mint. Today, you have the opportunity to get 1878-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins in certified condition online at Provident Metals.

In 1878, the Carson City Mint was one of three branch mints of the US Mint to issue the first-ever Morgan Dollar Silver Coins. In total, Carson City struck 2.212 million Morgan Dollars in 1878. While this was the second-highest mintage ever from Carson City during its 13-year release of Morgan Dollars, it was still well below the annual contribution of Morgan Dollars from branch mints. In 1878, for example, the Philadelphia Mint struck roughly 10.5 million Morgan Dollars and the San Francisco Mint struck some 9.775 million Morgan Dollars.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the 1878-CC Morgan Dollar, you will find the effigy of Lady Liberty. This bust of Liberty captures her figure in left-profile relief. The head of Liberty is shown with a Phrygian cap, while the coronet crown and a laurel wreath crown are also on her head. The field comes with 13 stars around her head, the word LIBERTY engraved on the coronet, and additional inscriptions of E PLURIBUS UNUM and 1878.

Reverse

The reverse field of 1878-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins features a depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design shows a bald eagle in front-facing relief with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The bird has its wings spread wide as an oak-and-laurel wreath frames the bird. Inscriptions on this field read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the CC mint mark of the Carson City Mint.

History

The Morgan Dollar Silver Coin was issued at the Carson City Mint in a total of 13 years. This included date marks from 1878 to 1885 and 1889 to 1893. While the Morgan Dollar was issued through 1904, the Carson City Mint closed in 1893, ending its contribution to the series.

Ordering
