The first year of issue in the Morgan Dollar Silver Series came in 1878. After five years without new strikes of US silver dollars, the denomination returned with a new design from US Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan. The coins became popular with collectors in the late-20th and early-21st centuries. One of the game-changing revelations in the series was the discovery of millions of uncirculated Carson City Mint issues of the coins in the 1960s hidden away in US Treasury vaults. Provident Metals now has 1878-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins with original GSA cards, boxes, and certificates available to you for purchase online.
Highlights:
When you purchase the 1878-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coin available in this Provident Metals listing, you will receive a coin struck during the first year of release for the Morgan Dollar program. These coins were never released into circulation by the United States Mint. Instead, the coins were buried away in the US Treasury vaults and never uncovered until the 1960s. At that time, the Government Services Administration (GSA) packaged the coins and auctioned them off to the public. The coins available in this listing come with the original packaging from the GSA that consists of a hard-plastic holder, a Certificate of Authenticity, and a box for display.
Obverse
Lady Liberty is found on the obverse of 1878-CC Morgan Dollars. Designed by George T. Morgan, this left-profile effigy of Liberty includes a coronet crown and a wreath crown in the hair of Liberty with a ring of 13 stars around her head. Inscriptions include E Pluribus Unum and 1878.
Reverse
A version of the heraldic eagle of the United States is depicted in the reverse field of 1878-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins. Also created by Morgan, this design shows the front-facing bald eagle with the olive branch of peace and the arrows of war in its talons. The inscriptions on this face read United States of America, In God We Trust, and One Dollar.
History
The GSA release of Morgan Dollars in the 1970s and 1980s consisted largely of Carson City-issued Morgan Dollars. 1878 was the first year of issue and only 61,000 of the 1878-CC Morgan Dollars were discovered in the US Treasury vaults at the time. It is estimated that a large number of those 61,000 coins were removed from the boxes and the COAs discarded for grading, making these specimens quite rare in the series.
