While there are many examples of the Morgan Dollar Silver Coin available to collectors in the 21st century, few of those coins are available in uncirculated condition. The US Treasury hoard of CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins discovered in the 1960s represents the largest collection of uncirculated Morgan Dollars. Though the Carson City Mint originally struck millions of the coins in the late-19th century, many of those ended up in Treasury vaults and never saw circulation. When those coins reemerged, the Government Services Administration held a public auction to sell the coins. Today, you have the opportunity to get 1878-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins in GSA holders online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
In 1878 when the United States Mint began issuing the new Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, the Philadelphia Mint and San Francisco Mint issued the bulk of the coins. Nearly 20 million Morgan Dollars were struck that year at those two mints, with no mint marks on Philadelphia specimens and S mint marks on the San Francisco coins. The Carson City Mint issued just 2.212 million coins with CC mint marks present. When the GSA auctioned off the Carson City Morgan Dollars discovered in Treasury vaults in the 1960s, it discovered only 61,000 coins from this date mark that were previously uncirculated.
Obverse
On the obverse side of 1878-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins is an effigy of Lady Liberty. The teacher and writer Anna Willess Williams sat as the model for George T. Morgan in creating this left-profile bust of Liberty. It is accompanied by inscriptions of E Pluribus Unum above and 1878 below. 13 stars surround Liberty.
Reverse
The reverse face of the 1878-CC Morgan Dollar comes with George T. Morgans image of the heraldic eagle. The design features a smaller bald eagle clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. There are inscriptions of United States of America, In God We Trust, and One Dollar on this side. You will also find a CC mint mark beneath the tail feathers of the eagle.
History
The GSA auctioned off the previously uncirculated Morgan Dollars from the US Treasury vaults in the 1970s and early 1980s. The coins were initially packaged in hard plastic cases and shipped in GSA boxes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Many of those coins have since lost the boxes and COAs, but you can still purchase samples like these that remain housed in GSA hard plastic with an identifying card inside.
