The 1878 date mark in the Morgan Dollar Series is a historically important one as the first date of issue for the silver dollars. This silver dollar design series launched in 1878 after a five-year hiatus in silver dollar coining in the United States. This design replaced the Seated Liberty design and carried US silver dollar coining through the last two-plus decades of 19th-century production and into the 20th century. Today, you have the opportunity to get certified 1878-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online from Provident Metals.

Morgan Dollar Silver Coins were issued by the United States Mint between 1878 and 1904, and once more in 1921. Five branch mints issued the coins in total. The Philadelphia Mint and San Francisco Mint issued the coins in each of the aforementioned years. The New Orleans Mint issued the coins in all but two of those years, missing out in 1878 and 1921. The Denver Mint only issued coins in 1921. The Carson City Mint, purpose-built for silver coining, struck the coins from 1878 to 1885 and 1889 to 1893.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1878-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins is an image of Liberty. This left-profile relief shows Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap with the coronet crown and laurel wreath in her hair. The design field includes 13 stars, an inscription of LIBERTY on the coronet, and additional inscriptions of E PLURIBUS UNUM and 1878.

Reverse

The reverse field of 1878-CC Morgan Dollar Coins comes with the heraldic eagle of the United States. Designed in 1878 by George T. Morgan, along with the obverse, it shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. A wreath frames the eagle with inscriptions on this side of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the CC mint mark of Carson City.

History

The 2.212 million coins struck at Carson City in 1878 marked the highest mintage during the initial production run at the Carson City and the second-highest overall from Carson City behind only the 1890-CC Morgan Dollar.
