Following the death of LeVere Redfield, a false wall in his basement revealed a hoard of 400 bags of silver dollars, many of which were Morgan Dollars.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1878 Morgan Dollar Coin features a beautiful portrait of Lady Liberty, her face calm and resolute. She wears a wreath of wheat and cotton on her head, symbolizing the agricultural bounty of the United States. The words “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are inscribed above her head, while the year of issue, “1878,” can be found below.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1878 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, you’ll find a majestic eagle with its wings spread wide, its talons gripping a bundle of arrows, and an olive branch. The eagle is surrounded by the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

History

The 1878 Morgan Dollar was the first silver dollar issued by the United States Mint since 1873. The coin was designed by George T. Morgan, a British-born engraver who was hired by the Mint in 1876. The coins were struck in 90% silver and 10% copper and were intended to be used in everyday transactions.

In the Redfield Hoard, some 400,000 silver dollars were found among the 400 bags of silver dollars behind the false wall of his basement. Among those dollars were both Morgan Dollars and Peace Dollars.
