Discover the timeless allure of the 1878-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, now available at Provident Metals! This historic coin holds a special place in American numismatic history, thanks to the enactment of the Bland-Allison Act in 1878, which paved the way for the reintroduction of US silver dollars into active circulation. Designed by the talented George T. Morgan, the Morgan Silver Dollar became an enduring symbol of American heritage, minted for an impressive 28-year period across five different branch mints.
Highlights:
In 1878, the United States Mint operated three branch mints, each contributing to the nationwide production of the Morgan Silver Dollar. The Philadelphia Mint on the East Coast, the Carson City Mint in the American West, and the San Francisco Mint on the West Coast played vital roles in minting this historic coin.
Obverse
George T. Morgan’s exquisite design graces the obverse of the 1878-S Morgan Dollars, featuring the striking bust of Lady Liberty donning a Phrygian cap, a coronet crown, and a laurel wreatha powerful representation of American ideals.
Reverse
The reverse of the coin proudly presents a unique front-facing bald eagle design, setting it apart from conventional 19th-century coin designs. Although it lacks the US national shield, the eagle boldly extends its wings, clutching arrows of war and an olive branch of peace.
History
The San Francisco Mint and the Philadelphia Mint were the only branch mints to strike Morgan Dollars every year the program was available. This includes 1878-1904 and again in 1921.
