Obverse

The obverse of the 1878-S Morgan Dollar Coin presents George T. Morgans detailed image of Liberty. She faces left, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with a coronet and laurel wreath. Surrounding her profile are 13 stars, a nod to the original American colonies. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1878.

Reverse

On the reverse of 1878-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, youll find the heraldic eagle design that made the coin famous. The bald eagle spreads its wings while holding arrows in one talon to show strength and an olive branch in the other to represent peace. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the S mint mark.

History

The Morgan Silver Dollar was first introduced in 1878 after the Bland-Allison Act required the U.S. Treasury to buy large amounts of silver and convert it into coinage. The Morgan Dollar remained in production until 1904 and briefly returned in 1921, representing an important chapter in the story of American silver coins.
