In the early years of the Morgan Silver Dollar, the United States Mint produced coins at four main facilities to serve the entire country. These included the Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City, and San Francisco Mints. Right now, 1878-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available through Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1878-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin available here is graded Mint State 63. Coins at this grade level show slight breaks in mint luster along with a number of small marks. Some coins may also have heavier marks or minor hairlines visible without magnification. In 1878, San Francisco edged out Philadelphia in coin production, while Carson City produced a much smaller number of Morgan Dollars that year.
Obverse
The obverse of 1878-S Morgan Dollar Coins features George T. Morgans classic design of Lady Liberty. Liberty is shown in left-profile relief, wearing a Phrygian cap, a coronet inscribed with Liberty, and a laurel wreath on her head. Surrounding her are 13 stars, representing the original 13 colonies of the United States. Inscriptions here include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1878.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1878-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, Morgans detailed heraldic eagle is shown. The eagle faces forward with its wings spread wide, holding a bundle of arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other to represent both war and peace. The inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the S mint mark.
History
The Morgan Silver Dollar offers a glimpse into the economic and political shifts of the late 19th century. While millions were minted, many were kept in government vaults instead of being used in daily transactions. These coins played a big role in the “Free Silver” movement, which was a major issue during the presidential election of 1896.
