Designed by George T. Morgan, the Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced by the United States Mint in 1878 and continued its production annually until 1904, with a final strike occurring in 1921. This historic coin circulated through several pivotal moments in American history, including the Reconstruction Era, the Gilded Age, and the Roaring Twenties. Right now, you can find 1878-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coins available at Provident Metals.

Obverse
The obverse of the 1878-S Morgan Dollar features Lady Liberty depicted in left-profile relief. Morgan is credited with using Anna Willes Williams as his inspiration for this well-known bust. Lady Liberty is portrayed wearing a Phrygian cap, adorned with a laurel wreath and a coronet crown, surrounded by a circle of 13 stars. The inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1878.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1878-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, you will see the heraldic eagle. Morgan’s interpretation of the eagle does not include a U.S. national shield; instead, it presents the American bald eagle in a front-facing stance with wings outspread. The eagles talons grasp arrows representing conflict and an olive branch symbolizing peace. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the S mint mark.
History
The 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar release was the first of its kind and marked a significant revival in the U.S. dollar coin program. The earlier Seated Liberty Dollar was discontinued in 1873, halting free silver coining. Following a five-year gap, the Morgan Silver Dollar debuted, showcasing the artistic talents of George T. Morgan, who was appointed as Assistant Engraver at the U.S. Mint in 1878.
