The $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin stands out as the largest denomination of gold coin ever produced by the United States Mint. Designed by James B. Longacre in 1849, it was introduced into circulation in 1850 and quickly gained popularity. The Double Eagle was commonly used in transactions between banks and merchants, both in the United States and abroad. Right now, 1878-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
All of the 1878-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins available from Provident Metals are in About Uncirculated condition. An AU grade signifies that the coins display medium to nearly full mint luster, with minimal wear on the highest points or only slight signs of friction on the raised features.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1878-S Liberty Double Eagle Coins, you will see Longacres portrait of Lady Liberty. This left-profile bust features Liberty with a coronet crown, surrounded by a ring of 13 stars. The date is marked at the bottom of the field. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1878.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1878-S Pre-33 $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin features the Great Seal of the United States, indicating these coins as Type III specimens, which feature the third design iteration. In addition to the bald eagle and national shield, the coins include arrows and an olive branch, along with the expanded TWENTY DOLLARS engraving for the denomination. Other inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the S mint mark.
History
During and after the American Civil War, gold production by the United States Mint was primarily concentrated at the Carson City Mint and the San Francisco Mint. In 1878, the San Francisco Mint struck an impressive 1.739 million coins, significantly more than the 543,625 coins produced by the Philadelphia Mint. The Carson City Mint added another 13,180 coins to the overall production.
