The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most well-known coins ever produced by the United States Mint and has remained popular with collectors for generations. Minted from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, the Morgan Dollar reflects a period when silver mining in the American West played a major role in the countrys development. This 1879-CC Morgan Silver Dollar comes from the early years of the series and features a capped die issue affecting the mint mark. Right now, certified 1879-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available from Provident Metals.

All 1879-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins offered here are graded F12. At this level of preservation, the main design elements remain clear, although wear is visible across the surfaces and some of the smaller details have softened. Portions of the lettering may also show wear. The Capped Die issue appears on roughly one-third of all 1879-CC Morgan Dollars and affects the mint mark. Because of a die error, metal built up around the CC mint mark, creating a raised and slightly blurred appearance that looks as if one set of letters is layered over another.

Obverse

For the obverse of the 1879-CC Morgan Dollar Coin, Liberty is shown in left-profile relief. Rather than using a traditional allegorical style, the design presents Liberty as an American woman. United States Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan created the portrait and used Philadelphia schoolteacher Anna Willess Williams as the model for Libertys profile. The inscriptions here read E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1879.

Reverse

In the reverse design of 1879-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, the coin displays the American bald eagle with wings extended. The eagle faces forward and holds an olive branch in one talon along with a bundle of arrows in the other. Together, these symbols represent the nations interest in peace while also showing its readiness to defend itself. Inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the CC mint mark.

History

The 1879-CC Morgan Silver Dollar was struck at the Carson City Mint in Nevada and is widely recognized as one of the more desirable coins from the Morgan Dollar series. With just 756,000 coins struck, the mintage was relatively low compared to many other issues from the time. Carson City coins are especially interesting to collectors because they are tied to the silver mining history of the American West. The well-known CC mint mark on the reverse quickly became associated with coins produced during this frontier-era period.
