The Morgan Silver Dollar is a classic piece of American coinage that has drawn the interest of collectors for more than a century. Originally minted from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, these large silver dollars reflect the growth of the United States during the height of the western silver mining boom. Their historic importance and recognizable design have helped them remain popular with collectors today. This 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar has been certified MS66+ by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Right now, certified 1879 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in an individual slab!
  • 2nd year of issue for the Morgan Silver Dollar!
  • Final mintage of 14,806,000 coins at Philadelphia!
  • Contains .7734 troy oz of actual silver content.
  • Bears a face value of $1 (USD) backed by the federal government.
  • Issued a grade of Mint State 66+ by the PCGS.
  • Lady Liberty is on the obverse.
  • Heraldic eagle on the reverse.
  • Original artwork by George T. Morgan.

Each 1879 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin offered here comes with an MS66+ grade from the PCGS. The plus designation identifies coins that fall at the upper end of the MS66 range. A typical MS66 example features strong original mint luster along with just a few small contact marks and faint hairlines that are generally only noticeable under magnification.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 1879 Morgan Dollar Coin is a left-facing portrait of Liberty created in a natural, American style. United States Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan developed the design and based Libertys appearance on Anna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia schoolteacher whose profile was chosen for its classical look and balanced features. The inscriptions here include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1879.

Reverse

The reverse of 1879 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins displays a bold image of the American bald eagle with its wings spread wide. The eagle holds an olive branch in one talon and a bundle of arrows in the other, symbolizing the nations pursuit of peace while remaining prepared to defend its interests. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.

History

The 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar produced at the Philadelphia Mint is part of the early years of the Morgan Dollar series, appearing only a year after the first coins were introduced in 1878. Philadelphia struck roughly 14.8 million coins in 1879. While circulated coins from this date are relatively accessible, examples with higher mint state grades and well-preserved luster are significantly harder to locate and are especially appreciated by collectors.
