Obverse

On the obverse of the 1879-S Morgan Dollar Coin, youll find George T. Morgans famous depiction of Lady Liberty. She is shown in left-profile, wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown, creating one of the most iconic images of Liberty in the history of U.S. coinage. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1879.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1879-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin showcases Morgans interpretation of the heraldic eagle. The design features a bald eagle with its wings fully spread, holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, representing the nations readiness for both war and peace. Unlike many other eagle designs, Morgans version does not include a national shield. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the S mint mark.

History

The Morgan Silver Dollar was first introduced in 1878, with coins struck at the Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco Mints. In 1879, the New Orleans Mint resumed production after a lengthy closure due to the Civil War. Although San Francisco experienced a slight decrease in mintage, with 9.11 million coins produced compared to 9.77 million in 1878, the New Orleans Mint contributed 2.88 million coins to the overall increase in Morgan Dollar production that year.
