First issued by multiple branch mints between 1878 and 1904, the Morgan Dollar Silver Coin went on to become one of the most prized items on numismatic collectors’ markets for decades. Often, these coins are rarities thanks to the vicissitudes of time and circulation wear, but in some cases, they were struck in unusually large numbers and high quality. The San Francisco Mint struck over 9 million silver dollars in 1879, for example, producing them in sufficiently high quality that a large percentage of them still survive in uncirculated “mint state” quality. This includes the 1879-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin now available in a grade of Mint State 64 from the team at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The 1879-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin arrives in a secure plastic container carrying a label that confirms its Mint State 64 grade. This means it has scattered hairline scratches, scuffs, and contact marks — potentially in prime focal areas — along with an attractive eye appeal and an average strike and luster. Provident Metals fully insures your shipment against any chance of mishap en route.
Obverse
The obverse field features Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap in profile, accompanied by the lettering “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1879” and with a set of thirteen decorative stars at the lower rim representing America’s founding states.
Reverse
The coin’s reverse field features a heraldic eagle clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons, along with the “S” mint mark and the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
History
One of the signature pieces of the colorful history of the Wild West — now mythologized as a place of pioneers and prospectors, outlaws and cowboys and cattle drivers — is the Morgan Silver Dollar. Its precious silver content, classic design, and remarkable size made for a valued coin when it was originally issued and have made it a sensation in collectors’ markets many decades later. There were multiple years of production at the San Francisco Mint that surpassed the norm in terms of both quantity and quality, and 1879 was one of those years.
