The Morgan Silver Dollar is a cornerstone of American numismatics, with four different mints producing these coins in the late 19th century. Among those years, 1879 stands out as one where all four branch mints, including San Francisco, struck the coin. Provident Metals now offers 1879-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coins in certified condition.
Highlights:
These 1879-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are graded Mint State 65 by the Professional Coin Grading Service. Coins in this grade are known for their strong luster and eye appeal, with only minor, scattered contact marks and hairlines that do not detract from the overall appearance.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 1879-S Morgan Dollar Coin, George T. Morgans design of Lady Liberty takes center stage. Liberty is depicted in left-profile relief, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with a laurel wreath and a coronet crown. Thirteen stars encircle the bottom half of the coins design. The inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1879.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1879-S Morgan Dollar features an American bald eagle, also designed by Morgan. The eagle is shown in front-facing relief with its wings spread wide. It clutches both the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace, symbolizing strength and tranquility. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the S mint mark.
History
The Morgan Silver Dollar was produced by four mints in its early years: Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Carson City. Carson Citys involvement was sporadic, with the mint striking coins from 1878-1885 and again from 1889-1893. The year 1879 is notable as one of the few where all four mints produced the coin.
