The Morgan Silver Dollar, first introduced in 1878, is one of the most well-known silver coins in the history of the United States. Named after its designer, George T. Morgan, these coins were minted from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. Right now, 1879-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available for purchase from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1879-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin offered at Provident Metals comes in Mint State 64 condition. These coins show average luster for their age and strike, and you might notice small contact marks. There may also be a few moderate or heavy marks, and potentially some small patches of hairlines.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1879-S Morgan Dollar Coin, Lady Liberty is shown in left-profile relief, as designed by George Morgan in 1878. She wears a Phrygian cap, a coronet crown, and a laurel wreath, with 13 stars surrounding her. Inscriptions read E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1879.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1879-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin features a heraldic eagle in front-facing relief. The eagles wings are spread wide, and it holds both an olive branch and arrows in its talons, flanked by an oak and laurel wreath. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the S mint mark.
History
The 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar is just the second year of production for this historic coin. In 1879, Morgan Silver Dollars were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, Carson City Mint, New Orleans Mint, and the San Francisco Mint. San Francisco produced the second-largest number of these coins that year, minting a total of 9,110,000 coins.
