One of the lesser-known forms of American currency from the 19th century was the $3 Indian Princess. This gold coin was introduced in 1854 by the United States Mint and issued through 1889. Obverse

The obverse of the 1880 Indian Princess Gold Coin features a left-profile effigy of Liberty. This design depicts her with an indigenous headdress and includes an inscription of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA along the top of the design element.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the $3 Indian Princess Gold Coin are inscriptions of the date and denomination inside a wreath. This wreath design consists of corn, wheat, cotton, and tobacco. The inscriptions at the center include 3 DOLLARS and 1880.

History

Indian Princess Gold Coins were struck by the Philadelphia Mint, Denver Mint, New Orleans Mint, and San Francisco Mint locations during the period of 1854 and 1889. After the Civil War, these coins were largely used on the West Coast where paper money was less popular. The Civil War caused great economic disruption on the East Coast and hard currency became scarce.
