One of the lesser-known forms of American currency from the 19th century was the $3 Indian Princess. This gold coin was introduced in 1854 by the United States Mint and issued through 1889. The coin saw production at four US Mint branch locations, but spent most of its time in circulation on the US West Coast. Provident Metals now has 1880 $3 Indian Princess Gold Coins available to you for purchase online in certified condition.
Highlights:
When you purchase one of these 1880 $3 Indian Princess Gold Coins online from Provident Metals, you will receive a coin that is housed in a plastic slab with an MS64 certification. Coins in this condition have an average mint luster with clusters of small contact marks, one or two heavy marks, and small patches of hairlines.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1880 Indian Princess Gold Coin features a left-profile effigy of Liberty. This design depicts her with an indigenous headdress and includes an inscription of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA along the top of the design element.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the $3 Indian Princess Gold Coin are inscriptions of the date and denomination inside a wreath. This wreath design consists of corn, wheat, cotton, and tobacco. The inscriptions at the center include 3 DOLLARS and 1880.
History
Indian Princess Gold Coins were struck by the Philadelphia Mint, Denver Mint, New Orleans Mint, and San Francisco Mint locations during the period of 1854 and 1889. After the Civil War, these coins were largely used on the West Coast where paper money was less popular. The Civil War caused great economic disruption on the East Coast and hard currency became scarce.
