Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are incredibly popular in the 21st century with collectors. The discovery of a large hoard of Morgan Dollars in US Treasury vaults in the 1960s injected uncirculated coins in the collector market and generated renewed interest in the 19th-century design for the silver dollar. When you buy these 1880-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online at Provident Metals, you are purchasing coins originally issued through public auctions by the Government Services Administration in the 1970s and 1980s. These coins were initially issued by the Carson City Mint in 1880, but never released into circulation and ended up in US Treasury vaults. Each coin comes inside of a hard plastic holder from the GSA.

Obverse

The obverse side of 1880-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins comes with a portrait of Liberty. This left-profile portrait was inspired by Anna Willess Williams, a teacher and writer, who sat for Morgan as the model for his bust of Liberty. In this design, Libertys hair is up in a bun under a cap at the back of her head with a coronet and wreath crown in her hair. The coronet has an inscription of Liberty. The words E Pluribus Unum are inscribed above her portrait and the 1880 date mark is below. There are 13 stars on this field as well.

Reverse

On the reverse field of 1880-CC Morgan Dollars is the depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Along with the obverse design, George T. Morgan created this reverse design of the heraldic eagle in 1878 for the release of the new silver dollar. The image shows a bald eagle in front-facing relief with a wreath below and the arrows of war and an olive branch of peace in its talons. The inscriptions on this side read United States of America, In God We Trust, and One Dollar. The CC mint mark is present beneath the tail feathers of the eagle.

History

The Carson City Mint issued a total of 591,000 Morgan Dollars in 1880. Throughout its production history, most of the Carson City Mint Morgan Dollars went to US Treasury vaults rather than being issued into circulation. When the GSA conducted an audit of the Morgan Dollars found in the Treasury vaults in the 1960s, it discovered 131,500 coins from the 1880 Carson City issue.
