The Morgan Silver Dollar stands as one of the most iconic silver coins ever produced by the United States Mint. Introduced in 1878, this historic coin was designed by George T. Morgan, who served as Assistant Engraver at the Mint. Its creation marked the revival of the silver dollar denomination following a five-year pause in production. Today, 1880-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins in certified condition are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1880-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coin available here is certified in Mint State 63 condition. Coins at this grade display several small contact marks and a few more distinct abrasions. Light hairlines or a small cluster of them may appear, but the coins still offer strong detail and attractive eye appeal overall.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1880-CC Morgan Dollar Coin, Lady Liberty is shown in left-profile relief. Designed by Morgan in 1878, the image depicts Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom, with a laurel wreath and a coronet crown. Surrounding her portrait are 13 stars for the original states. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1880.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1880-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coin showcases Morgans heraldic eagle design. This version omits the national shield and instead shows the eagle holding both arrows and an olive branch, representing the nations dual commitment to strength and peace. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the CC mint mark.
History
In 1880, the Carson City Mint struck 591,000 Morgan Silver Dollarsa notable figure for this smaller branch. These 1880-CC coins represent an early chapter in the Morgan Dollars history, which began only two years earlier in 1878. Their lower production numbers compared to larger mints like Philadelphia and San Francisco make them appealing to collectors, especially those focusing on Carson City issues.
