The Morgan Silver Dollar stands as one of the most admired designs ever created by the US Mint. Collectors now have the chance to own the 3rd coin in this remarkable series with the 1880-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1880-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin is available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. These coins ship individually in plastic flips, with multiples of 20 arriving in plastic tubes. The 1880 edition is the third in the Morgan Dollar Series and was struck at four different US Mint facilities that year.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1880-S Morgan Dollar features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty, wearing a Phrygian cap, a symbol of freedom. Designed by George T. Morgan, this image is surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies. The inspiration for this Liberty figure came from a real person, Anna Williams, a teacher from Philadelphia. Inscriptions here read E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1880.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1880-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, youll find the iconic American bald eagle. This eagle is shown with its wings spread, grasping arrows and an olive branch. The design, also by George T. Morgan, symbolizes both strength and peace, with a laurel wreath beneath the eagle. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the S mint mark.
History
In 1880, three of the four US Mint branches struck Morgan Dollars in significant numbers. The Philadelphia Mint led with 12.6 million coins, while Carson City had the lowest output with just 591,000 coins. The New Orleans Mint struck 5.305 million coins, and the San Francisco Mint contributed 8.9 million of these 1880-S Morgan Dollars.
