Obverse

Liberty is shown in left-profile relief on the obverse design field of 1881-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins. The image was created by George T. Morgan with Anna Willess Williams sitting as the model for his portrait of Lady Liberty. The left-profile image shows Liberty with a coronet in her hair that bears an inscription of Liberty and a wreath crown as well. In addition to the 13 rings around her head, you will find inscriptions of E Pluribus Unum and 1881.

Reverse

The heraldic eagle of the United States, as designed by George T. Morgan, features on the reverse of 1881-CC Morgan Dollars. This design shows only the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. Inscriptions include United States of America, In God We Trust, and One Dollar. The CC mint mark of the Carson City Mint is found below the tail feathers of the eagle, above the D in the word dollar.

History

The discovery of millions of Morgan Dollars in US Treasury vaults in the 1960s came as Americans were redeeming millions of Silver Certificates, a form of paper currency redeemable at face value for silver dollars. The Government Services Administration audited the hoard and found 147,500 1881-CC Morgan Dollars among the collection. That figure represents more than half of the original mintage of just 296,000 1881-CC Morgan Dollars struck in the 19th century.
