Morgan Dollars are very popular with collectors in the 21st century as the number of coins available dwindles and the age of the program increases. As of 2021, it has been a century since Morgan Dollars were last struck. The majority of the coins issued in the series were first struck in the final two decades of the 19th century. With many melted down in the early 20th century, the discovery of uncirculated Morgan Dollars in US Treasury vaults in the 1960s altered the landscape of Morgan Dollar collecting. Provident Metals now proudly offers GSA-packed 1881-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins for you to purchase online.
Highlights:
When you purchase an 1881-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coin at Provident Metals, you will receive a coin that remains in the original inner packaging from the Government Services Administration. The GSA packaged the coins inside of hard plastic holders for delivery during its auctions in the 1970s and 1980s that dispersed the coins to collectors following the discovery of hoards of Morgan Dollars in US Treasury vaults in the 1960s.
Obverse
Lady Liberty is found on the obverse side of 1881-CC Morgan Dollars. The image of Liberty found here is based on the figure of Anna Willess Williams, a teacher and noted writer of the late-19th century. This portrait of Liberty comes with a coronet and wreath crown in the hair, with the word Liberty inscribed on the coronet. There is a ring of 13 stars on this side of the coin with inscriptions of 1881 and E Pluribus Unum.
Reverse
Featured on the reverse of 1881-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins is a vision of the heraldic eagle of the United States. The design is a notable exception to heraldic eagle imagery on American coins in the 19th century as it lacks the US national shield. The design includes only a front-facing bald eagle holding the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. Inscriptions on this face of the coin read United States of America, In God We Trust, and One Dollar. The CC mint mark is found beneath the tail feathers of the eagle above the D in the word dollar.
History
Minting records show that the Carson City Mint originally struck only 296,000 1881 Morgan Dollars. When the GSA audited the stores found in US Treasury vaults in the 1960s, it found 147,500 coins, a total that was more than half the original mintage of the coins in 1881!
