Obverse

The obverse of the 1881-CC Morgan Dollar comes with a Liberty portrait created in 1878 by George T. Morgan. This vision of Liberty shows her head in left-profile relief with a Phrygian cap. She is also wearing a coronet crown and a laurel wreath. There is an inscription above her head that reads E PLURIBUS UNUM, with the word LIBERTY inscribed on the coronet crown. The field offers 13 stars and an 1881 date mark.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 1881-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coin is an image of the US heraldic eagle. This design was created for this coin series in 1878 and shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief with its wings spread wide and its talons clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. Inscriptions on this side of the coin read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the CC mint mark of the Carson City Mint.

History

The 1881 release of Morgan Dollar Silver Coins featured one of the lowest mintages in the history of the series. Of the 296,000 coins originally struck in 1881, some 49% of those coins were discovered sitting in US Treasury vaults in the 1960s and later sold at auction as part of the GSA Hoard in the 1970s and 1980s.
