Morgan Silver Dollars are some of the most prized coins on the modern collectors’ market: a coin whose size, classic design, and silver contents make it a welcome addition to any collection. A particularly populous year for mint state Morgan coins is 1881, which boasts a large surviving population of coins from the San Francisco Mint in particular. Coins of this type with a Mint State grade of 64 are especially common, making them a great option for adding high-quality Morgans to your collection at an affordable price. With its grade certified by the leading coin grading service NGC, the 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coin is now available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coin ships with a label to confirm its Mint State 64 grade, which indicates a coin with scattered hairline scratches, scuffs, and contact marks — some of which may occur in prime focal areas — an average strike and luster, and an attractive overall eye appeal. All shipments come secured in a tamper-proof plastic slab and are fully insured against any chance of mishap by the team at Provident Metals.
Obverse
An effigy of Lady Liberty in a Phrygian cap dominates the coin’s obverse field, accompanied by the lettering “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1881” and thirteen decorative stars at the lower rim.
Reverse
The reverse field features a heraldic eagle holding a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons, along with the “S” mint mark and the lettering “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
History
Morgan Silver Dollars were first issued between 1878 and 1904 and became particularly identified with the semi-mythic settlement boom in the so-called Wild West, with all its associated images of pioneers and prospectors, cowboys and cattle drives, and pistol-wielding outlaws. It was prized originally for its prodigious size, arresting visual design, and substantial silver contents. Many issues of the Morgan dollar grew to become rarities on the collectors’ market in the years since due to attrition from circulation wear and other factors, but some coins survived in unusual numbers. Almost a third of the San Francisco Mint’s 12.7 million-piece striking of the silver dollar in 1881 survives down to the present day.
